Veterans of the Storm: Why Every Diagnosis Needs a Different Response
When a veteran is misdiagnosed — or when the real condition is missed — the treatment fails, the emotional damage grows deeper, and the risk of suicide increases. Below is a breakdown of how each mental health condition screened by Veterans of the Storm requires a different type of support, and what happens when it is misunderstood or treated incorrectly.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
- Needs: executive function coaching, emotional regulation support, and possible stimulant medication- Misdiagnosed as: depression, laziness- Risks: medication mismatch, increased shame, suicidal thinking from persistent failure despite effort
RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria)
- Needs: emotional mirroring, identity rebuilding, nonjudgmental support- Misdiagnosed as: BPD, oversensitivity- Risks: emotional collapse, self-harm, silent suffering from invalidation
BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)
- Needs: trust-based therapy, identity support, abandonment injury work- Misdiagnosed as: trauma, ADHD alone- Risks: untreated emotional volatility, repeated relationship rupture, chronic instability
Bipolar Disorder
- Needs: mood stabilization, cycle tracking, structured support- Misdiagnosed as: trauma, BPD, or ADHD- Risks: inappropriate medication, undetected mania, depressive collapse without context
Depression
- Needs: energy conservation strategies, validation, purpose reconnection- Misdiagnosed as: trauma only, ADHD- Risks: persistent hopelessness, emotional paralysis, reinforced self-blame
Anxiety
- Needs: nervous system regulation, emotional safety, grounding tools- Misdiagnosed as: oppositional behavior, overreactivity- Risks: chronic panic, isolation, self-criticism for fear-based avoidance
Trauma-Related Collapse
- Needs: emotional stabilization, grief work, trust and regulation support- Misdiagnosed as: bipolar, depression, personality disorder- Risks: emotional numbness misread as apathy, loss of identity, suicidal detachment
